A touching story about a young Japanese-American girl who wants to participate in
an age old New year’s family tradition of mochi-making. Mochi is a traditional
Japanese rice cake made of glutinous rice and sweetened. However, Jasmine is only
eight and she’s too young to make mochi with the women of her family. She gets a
great idea----she’ll become strong so she can help the men pound the mochi. This
book deals with families, and themes of belonging and self-esteem. It is written by a
Japanese-American author, Debby Michiko Florence.
